Corona: A Fusion of Nature and Artifact

Jo Zhu's Award-Winning Cabinet Design Inspired by Construction Sites

Inspired by the corrugated steel sheets walling a construction site, designer Jo Zhu of Suyab Design has created a unique cabinet design named 'Corona'. This design, a harmonious blend of nature and artifact, has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017.

The Corona cabinet is a testament to Zhu's innovative approach to design. The inspiration for the design came from an unlikely source - the steel sheets walling a construction site. The non-straight lines and corrugation of the sheets sparked a new idea in Zhu, leading to the creation of a furniture piece that beautifully mimics the texture of natural granite.

The cabinet's unique properties lie in its combination of natural and artificial elements. The doors of the cabinet, abundant with wrinkled lines, imitate the texture of natural granite. The use of South American rosewood, cattle leather, and tempered glass further enhances the cabinet's appeal, making it a standout piece in any setting.

The production process of the Corona cabinet involves a mix of traditional and modern techniques. Mortise-tenon joints are used for the wooden frame and legs, while the stainless steel doors are hammered and attached to the wooden frame using pivot hinges. The backboard inside the cabinet is adorned with leather pieces, attached using the needle method typically used for making small leather wares.

The cabinet, with its width of 1000mm, depth of 423mm, and height of 1786mm, cannot be disassembled and must be transported as a whole. The doors can be opened wide at both flanks, providing users with ample space to store items such as wine bottles, china, and metalware.

The Corona cabinet is not just a functional piece of furniture, but also an art installation. Zhu's design breaks away from the norm, focusing not just on functionality but also on aesthetic appeal. The cabinet's outward appearance, reminiscent of a block of granite, contrasts with its vivid red leather interior, creating a striking visual effect.

The Corona cabinet is a testament to Zhu's innovative approach to design and his ability to draw inspiration from the most unlikely sources. It's a perfect example of how design can transform everyday objects into extraordinary pieces of art.
